creative thorp

After many years working as sensible professionals Mary and Steve have decided to indulge their creative compulsions on a permanent basis and are now the creative thorps! Mary’s images appear in a range of beautifully made cards and art card boxes that are mini works of art in themselves. Many of the images are also available as mounted photographic prints and canvases. Steve’s poems are simple, direct and visual and are available in poetry boxes and pamphlets.

Mary writes: “The idea for creative thorp was one of those ‘lightbulb’ moments that occurred when trying to come up with a name to put on the back of my first range of photographic cards. It instantly became a vehicle for all of us as a creative family.”

MARY

"I love the raw integrity of simple landscapes: lots of sky, bare stones, ragged seas and dry grasses blown by the wind. Colour and light affect our experience of environments. I try to capture the drama of wind, sky, weather and sunlight changing over the landscape in the sparse graphical images that I print.

The
images begin life as spontaneously taken digital photographs that are manipulated and washed with colour to draw out the stark forms. It requires both confidence and discipline – doing less rather than more to leave the image as untouched as possible. Digital photographic art has proved to be a perfect medium for me, indulging a passion for colour, form and space and, for the moment, I am comfortable to keep a lens between me and the finished piece of work.

Since childhood I have been a compulsive maker of things and am inspired by the simple beauty of good design and impeccable construction. In my working life as a designer I am considered and thoughtful, and I'm delighted to be producing work as an artist too. I enjoy the simple act of printing, folding, packing and finishing the cards and boxes I make. When I am finished I’ve made something useful and beautiful that is entirely mine. It is a good feeling".

STEVE

Steve's work as a therapist and consultant feeds his creativity, and he has a special interest in how we can feel joy in our lives and in our work. To find out more about Steve's work in this area, click HERE to be taken to his Lifescape website, and HERE to go the Steve's editions poetry pamphlets weblog.

He writes:
"My poetry is intended to be accessible, observational, reflective and emotional. I’m fascinated by words, imagination and creativity: my biggest inspirations come from the simplest things: a soft, summer wind; a birdsong, the changing moods of the ocean; a sense of belonging;  a gentle, loving look or touch.

I work as a psychotherapist, poet and part-time card-folder – and enjoy every minute! The pleasure of creating nice stuff that people treasure is one that I’ve recently discovered. And if someone is helped, inspired or touched by something I’ve written then that is a real piece of joy!"
